Short History |
|
The research done by Romanian
archaeologists at Bugiulesti, Valcea Country, has led to the
discovery of traces of human presence dating back as early as
the Lower Palaeolithic (approximately two million years BC).
These vestiges are among the oldest in Europe, revealing a
period when "man," a humanoid in fact, went physically and
spiritually through the stages of his coming out of the animal
status. A denser human population, ("the Neanderthal man") can
be proved to have lived about 100,000 years ago; a relatively
stable population can only be found beginning with the Neolithic
(6- 5,000 years BC)... |

National Flag |
|
The national flag of Romania is a tricolour: red, yellow and blue. It has not undergone many or major changes in the course of history. Only the distribution of the colours (in
point of proportion and position) changed to a certain extent,
being made equal after the Revolution of 1848 when, under the
spur of the French revolutionary spirit, many states in Europe
adopted as their national flag the dimensionally standardised
three-colour banner. Sigillography attests that at certain
historical stages, the Romanian flag had the three colours
arranged horizontally with the red in the upper part, the yellow
in the middle and the blue in the lower part. Also, the
proportion of the colours was not the same as it is now (33 per
cent for each colour)... |

Code of Arms |
|
After 1859 (when Wallachia and Moldavia
united into one state) the question of a representative coat of
arms arose. In 1863 the solution was found of joining the
ancient, traditional symbols of Wallachia (the golden eagle with
cross) and Moldavia (the auroch with a star between its horns).
Later (1872), Romania’s heraldry commission proposed a synthetic
coat of arms that combined the traditional symbols of all the
Romanian provinces: Wallachia, Moldavia, Bukovina, Transylvania,
Maramures, Crisana, Banat and Oltenia... |

National Anthem |
|
The lyrics of the
national anthem belong to Andrei Muresan (1816-1863), a Romantic
poet, journalist, translator, a genuine tribune of the times
marked by the 1848 Revolution. The music was composed by Anton
Pann (1796-1854), a poet and ethnographer, a man of great
culture, a singer and author of music textbooks... |

Geography |
| Romania is the country
of the Carpathians, the Danube and the Black Sea. The
Carpathians are one of the most important mountain chains in
Europe. The skeleton of the Romanian land is formed by the
Southeastern Carpathians, which make an almost compact ring,
with the Transylvania Plateau inside. From the crowns of the
Carpathians, the relief descends in almost concentric steps. All
the units of relief from the exterior of the Carpathians are
composed of sediments of Carpathian origin... more |

Culture |
| Regarding the Brancusi
Monumental Ensemble renovation in Tirgu Jiu project, WMF has
supervised every aspect of the landscape design and construction
process and we do not understand why the material used for the
alleys is being questioned. This material called “stones fines”
is applied with a stabilizer and has been used extensively in
parks and outdoor public areas surrounding monuments and museums
in the United States and Canada, as well as throughout Europe in
countries such as France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Austria,
Italy and Sweden -- often under conditions much worse than those
at Tirgu Jiu... more |

Education |
|
The deadline for
setting up the Offices for European Programs in accredited
higher education establishments is 1st July 2005. The people
working at the Offices will be responsible among others for
identifying the projects run by the institution and funded
through the ex-programs Socrates and Leonardo da Vinci and
establishing a data base. They will also inform the prospective
beneficiaries and project promoters about the current
educational programs and will disseminate information related to
the new Integrated Program for lifelong learning (which will
begin in the EU in 2007)... |
